Competitors unite for charity
March 7, 2011
By: Gil Roth
President, Pharma & Biopharma Outsourcing Association
Geoff Glass, Patheon’s EVP of Global Strategy, Sales, and Marketing, and Colin Terry, Aptuit’s EVP, Commercial Operations, were catching up during the AAPS conference in 2009 when they hatched an idea: marketplace competitors competing for a good cause.
Both men are ardent runners and had run marathons in the past. They went back to their respective companies and assembled teams to run in the 2010 NYC Marathon for charity.
Mr. Glass said, “For me, running marathons is great. But to do it to make a difference is so much more important than personal records and fitness.”
Mr. Terry added, “Both of us were relatively new at our companies, and the process of building teams and raising charity donations really opened doors.”
The two teams combined to raise nearly $150,000 for their twocharities, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) andThe Hole In The Wall Gang, Paul Newman’s charity to support summer camps for kids with severe medical conditions.
And how did Colin and Geoff’s head-to-head competition turn out?
“I beat him by 45 seconds,” said Colin. “But I think he must’ve stopped to tie his shoe.”
“Don’t be too impressed,” Geoff added. “He also beats me by about 45 pounds!” -GYR
